CTRLGRAU

The study CTRLGRAU is meant to improve the fairing of fonts in Flash. Bitmap text leaves an edgy impression and gives little room for creativity. But the Flash integrated anti-aliasing tool is hard to control, gives uneven results and is difficult to read in lesser font sizes.
CTRLGRAU tries to fiend a compromise. It is designed like a Bitmap font but allows to control on sub pixel level. It can create quarter, half, three quarter and fully „inked“ pixels. Flash will then smooth them to 25%, 50% and 75% grey. A letter will always be rendered the same way thus giving the font an even appearance. This allows you to control the process of anti-aliasing.

Above: This is the results of an experiment to create a legible font with as little pixels as possible. A middle length of three and top and bottom length of two pixels each seem to be the limit. Later on I made use of single raster elements. The Multiple Master Font allows to create many raster varieties.
